The dimple

The dimple is the small fold just under the knot. It gives the tie a little depth, so it falls from the knot with some shape instead of hanging flat, and it only takes a few seconds while you tighten.

How to make it

  1. Tie your knot, but stop before you tighten it fully. You shape the dimple first and then lock it in as the knot tightens.
  2. Press your index finger into the middle of the tie, just below the knot.
  3. Pinch the edges of the tie around your finger with your thumb and middle finger, so the fabric folds in around it.
  4. Keep pinching while you slide the knot up to your collar. The knot closes around the fold and holds it.
  5. Give the knot a final pinch so the dimple holds through the day.

Good to know

Keep the dimple in the middle, right under the knot. It does not have to look perfect: a fold that looks as if you spent a few seconds on it is exactly right.

Silk and textured ties of normal width hold a dimple best, because the fabric keeps its shape. Very narrow ties barely hold one, and that is fine. The knot matters too. A Four‑in‑Hand or a Half Windsor takes a dimple more easily than a bulky Full Windsor.
